The most frequent question we're asked following our concerts is "Why Ebène " (Ebène is the French for ebony). Part of the answer will be found in this page, dedicated to jazz. When we started up working as a quartet and had to find a name for our very young group, we looked for what represented us most: love of improvisation, a strong desire to discover, a need to remain free from all kind of trend in the history of western music.
Ebony, that beautiful and sound material, is used in the making of varied music instruments (including a part of the violin and bow), and many civilaisations use it in art. To us, the word Ebène symbolises a journey throughout varied cultures and civilisations, both in the past and present, and the exoticism that can still feed our own civilisation. This spirit accounts for our choice for jazz themes as encores in classical concerts, and also leads us to more significant concert projects with other musicians. This page represents this small but major part of our activity....
